L-lysine is an essential amino acid and the human body cannot synthesize it on its own. Therefore, we must supply lysine through diet or dietary supplements. Our diet should therefore be varied with a balanced content of sugars, fats and proteins. Lower levels of lysine have been found in vegetarians (especially vegans), athletes, children, the elderly and people with an unbalanced diet low in lysine.
